Running in the dark can be great! Be prepared when running in the dark, which may be unavoidable with your other work/life commitments.
Follow these tips to stay safe and keep on top of your training:
1. Wear a Head torch
Buy a head torch. This will open up unlit paths to mix up your routes. I recommend the Petzl Actik! When the temperature drops or it’s been raising this will also help with spotting puddles and ice.
2. Wear hi-visibility clothing
You’ll want to be noticed by other people driving, running, walking and riding. Wear a hi-vis jacket or vest to go with your head torch so you stand out 🙂. Â
3. Run with a buddy
This is much about motivated for getting out, but it’s also safer to run with somebody else. Start your run together or arrange to meet on route, you’ll notice the time pass and mentally is a great way to log those miles, particularly if you’re just out for an easier, conversational paced run.
4. Run on familiar, well lit routes
If you know the area, paths and streets you’re running on then you’ll have less chance of getting lost or tripping. Try to avoid going too much off familiar territory, particularly trails and country lanes where you may get caught out with poor surfaces and limited foot paths.
Combined with your hi-vis clothing and head torch you’ll give yourself all the chances you need to be visible to others, stay safe and enjoy your run. 😎
