I found this talk from Stephen Seiler very relevant to my journey. Do you want to train like an elite athlete? A common misconception for uniformed runners is that they need to knock the socks off every run. No Pain, No Gain! giving 110% every time they head out the door as elite athletes do! Many have probably fallen into this trap, not taking the easy days easy! I know I have :)
What Stephen highlights through his studies, however, this is not how elite athletes operate! They spend most of their time training in the ‘easy’ zone, with more focus on consistency and good form. This is also termed as the 80/20 rule. I really appreciated this once I started commuting on my bike to work. This was all easy riding but built an excellent fitness base, allowing me to easily step up for an event by incorporating a few faster/longer training sessions.
If you have a spare 15 minutes and want to see the facts and science behind elite athlete training, please watch this. I can’t promise you’ll turn elite but you may be able to knock down those long-standing personal bests!
